169 – Canadian Federation of Independent Business

Listen to this episode

Today we have Mark Rodgers join us from CFIB – Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

Mark shares with us his start in the hearing clinic business and how he sold the business.  He realized that the market was changing and it was time to move on.

Mark worked at post construction cleaning (one of the companies he worked for was The Bradburn Group – past podcast).

The hearing clinics were members of the CFIB, and because he had a sales background, he liked the structure and what they do for small business, he approached the CFIB about working with them.

Small businesses that have limited resources, this is who the CFIB is for.  How can the small businesses compete with the big businesses.

We touch on the proposed changes to the income tax act, income splitting and passive investments in corporations, and capital gains.  The CFIB created the Coalition for Tax Fairness.  We also talk about the changes to minimum wage in Ontario.

The CFIB has resources available to their members.  They have human resources support and a small business compliance (employment standards and ministry of labour) department.  They are up to speed on the rules and regulations and can help small businesses be compliant.

The website is a great resource, but a meeting with the CFIB can help hone in to what is specific to each individual industry.
